The BiteThe Nebraska Department Health and Human Services, Public Health Division has developed these Web pages to track and combat the spread of West Nile virus (WNV).Nebraska is reporting the first human West Nile virus case for the week ending July 19th, 2008. The case was reported from Merrick County.

The annual totals for 2007 included163 clinical cases and
16 blood donors. There were four deaths.
The 2007 year was the 4th most severe year for WNV in Nebraska, behind 2003 (2022 cases), 2006 (224 Cases) and 2005 (176 cases).
Based on cases reported to CDC year-to-date, Nebraska ranked 7th in the total number of WNV cases in 2007. This does not reflect rate per 100,000.
Surveillance Efforts
DHHS surveillance efforts include trapping mosquitoes, collecting dead birds and monitoring and monitoring both live birds. The Nebraska Department of Agriculture investigates any possible cases involving horses. All human cases are investigated by the DHHS.Citizen Involvement
