Purpose Statement:
The School Health Program contributes to the health and educational success of all children, aged 0-21 years, through capacity-building consultation and training services to school nurses, school administrators, and representatives of public, private, and community agencies serving children and families.

Goals of the School Health Program

  1. Provide quality improvement and assurance activities related to Nebraska state statutes and federal guidelines for school health:

    1. Immunizations

    2. Health screening

    3. Medication administration, including self-management plans

    4. Physical and visual exams

    5. Emergency medical response to breathing emergencies

    6. School services for children with special health care needs

  2. Provide resources and guidance in the areas of disease and infection control practices at school.

  3. Provide resources and guidance for the management of crisis medical situations at school.

  4. Promote healthy school environments and practices to reduce the prevalence of overweight and obesity in Nebraska children.

  5. Promote healthy school environments and practices to reduce child and adolescent tobacco and alcohol use, and decrease exposure to secondhand smoke.

  6. Provide a plan for gathering data from schools in order to:

    1. Measure the delivery of required services and interventions at school.

    2. Identify emerging trends in the health needs of Nebraska’s school children.

    3. Assess the capacity of schools to meet child health needs that require attention at school.

  7. Promote evidence-based, theoretically-sound, best practices in the delivery of  professional school nursing services in the state of Nebraska.

  8. Integrate early childhood health issues and service delivery into the school health program.

  9. Promote community awareness of the health needs of children at school, and the role of school health professionals.

  10. Network with public and private agencies and organizations to improve community systems of care for children and families.
