Pandemic Flu

Nebraska's Pandemic Flu Summit
February 23, 2006 - Lincoln, Nebraska

Nebraska’s Pandemic Flu Summit gave participants an excellent opportunity to learn more about pandemic flu. People learned about the science behind pandemic flu, why we’re worried about a possible outbreak and what they can do to protect themselves, their families, businesses, schools and communities.

Several high-ranking officials spoke at the Summit including U.S. Health and Human Services Secretary Mike Leavitt, U.S. Department of Agriculture Secretary Mike Johanns, Governor Dave Heineman, Lt. Governor Rick Sheehy, Senator Chuck Hagel, and DHHS Chief Medical Officer Dr. Joann Schaefer.

“Personal preparedness can’t be stressed enough and it was highlighted several times during the summit,” Dr. Joann Schaefer said.   “What people should do now is stockpile extra food, water and normal prescription drugs.  People should also practice good hygiene:  cover your cough, wash your hands, stay home if you’re sick and stay away from people who are sick.  We are all leaders in this planning effort and there are many resources out there to help you.”
