Client Eligibility Verification

Before providing services, verify your patient’s Medicaid eligibility. Be sure to note if your patient is enrolled in a Medicaid managed care plan, has Medicare or third party insurance coverage.

You can verify Medicaid eligibility five ways:

  1. Ask to see the client’s monthly Nebraska Medicaid Card or Nebraska Health Connection ID Document. For an explanation and examples of these documents, see PDF 471-000-123.
  2. Call the automated Nebraska Medicaid Eligibility System (NMES). For instructions, see PDF 471-000-124.
  3. Work with your electronic data interchange (EDI) clearinghouse to set up electronic Health Care Eligibility Benefit Inquiry (ASC X12N 270/271). For more information, go to Electronic Data Interchange
  4. Access client eligibility through the internet. Separate login IDs and passwords are required for each person accessing the site. For enrollment forms, go to Internet Access for Providers.
  5. Call the Medicaid Inquiry at 877-255-3092 or 402-471-9128.
