Safe Kids Nebraska

Safe Kids NebraskaWho We Are...

Safe Kids Nebraska, coordinated through the Nebraska Department of Health and Human Services, was created in 1993 to address accidental injuries to children 14 and under. The Campaign is part of  Safe Kids Worldwide founded by the Children’s National Medical Center in Washington, D.C. to prevent the number one killer of children ages 14 and under-accidental injuries. Since the inception of the Safe Kids Worldwide in 1987, the accidental childhood injury death rate has declined 26 percent.

The goals of  Safe Kids are to address major areas of accidental injuries to children 14 and under by raising awareness among adults and children, by building long-term grass roots coalitions, and by making childhood injury a public priority. The major causes of accidental injuries addressed by the Safe Kids are:

At the heart of the Campaign are local Safe Kids Coalitions that work to make their community safer for children. In Nebraska, local coalitions and chapters promote safety through safety education and awareness campaigns, community programming, distribution of safety devices and local events/celebrations.

Safe Kids Buckle Up
This is a campaign sponsored by General Motors and Safe Kids Worldwide. It is a public education effort to increase awareness of proper child safety seat and safety belt usage for children through child safety seat check-up events and trainings. The Buckle Up program provides a unique hands-on experience to learn about the correct way to install child safety seats and to receive child passenger safety information through child safety seat check up events across Nebraska.  Certified Child Passenger Safety Technicians are located across the state to provide their communities with this life-saving service.

Gear Up Games
The Games are interactive safety obstacle course featuring 10 basic stations. Each station focuses on a different skill needed for childhood injury prevention such as testing smoke detectors, bike safety, and proper use of protective gear for rollerblading.

Bicycle Helmet Program
A bicycle safety education program that offers bike helmets at a discounted price through Bell Sports.

Smoke Detector Program
A fire safety/prevention education program that teaches children the basics of what to do in case of a fire such as crawl low in smoke, stop, drop and roll, developing an escape route, and calling 9-1-1. This program also includes smoke detectors at a discounted price through First Alert.
