Geographic Information System (GIS) is more than maps of countries,
rivers and roads. GIS allows us to work with virtually any kind of specialized information
and put it in a map format thats easy to read, understand and analyze.
GIS technology has many possibilities because theres a
geographic component to just about everything we do. Mapping Medicaid providers, geocoding
cancer patients, proving health facility maps and responding to emergencies all involve
geography.
At DHHS were using GIS technology in a variety of ways.
Weve already charted information on West Nile Virus, Drought across Nebraska, cancer
patients across the state, to name a few. And our continuing work in emergency planning
has earned us national recognition in the public health/GIS arena.
During an emergency, GIS software, named SMRT for
Stockpile Management Receiving and Tracking, gives us the ability to map and manage
inventory and distribution for vital supplies. It provides inventory information and
allows us to quickly and accurately assess population needs for any place in Nebraska.
If you need a map, poster or graphic feel free to get ahold of the
GIS Department.
