Welcome to the Food Distribution Program Web page.
The Food Distribution Program distributes USDA donated foods (commodities)
to participating agencies: schools, child care agencies, charitable organizations, summer
food service programs, soup kitchens, food pantries, and food banks.
On a quarterly basis, we will update these pages with information about
commodities and let you know about cancellations and other changes that affect your
commodities .
If you think of any other information that may be of interest to everyone,
please send it to us and we'll see if it can be included.
Commodity News
The USDA recently released a commodity update on changes it is making to bring products
more in line with the Dietary Guidelines for Americans including:
- Increasing whole grains - USDA is increasing the amount of whole grain products
available in the commodity program, including whole wheat flour, rolled oats, regular
brown rice and pasta products.
- Lowering fat - Currently the USDA is working to eliminate trans fat from frozen potato
products. They are also reviewing trans fat levels in all commodity products.
- Lowering sugar - Applesauce is now only offered unsweetened. All commodity canned
fruits continue to be packed in juice and/or water, or light syrup. This has been
the case for over 15 years.
- Lowering sodium - Canned vegetables meet the Food and Drug Administration's
"healthy" standard for sodium, which is less than or equal to 480 mg per
serving. The USDA is looking to lower the sodium content even further in the
upcoming school year.
Food Cancellations
Pineapple: Due to weather related problems in Hawaii,
pineapple products are in low supply. The USDA has cancelled all orders for the
school year 2007-2008 for all types frozen, canned and fresh.
