Massage Therapy
Temporary License
A graduate of a course of study and training in massage therapy who has met all the
requirements for a license except passage of the licensure examination may apply
for a temporary license to practice massage therapy, subject to the following requirements
and limitations:
- The temporary license shall be valid until the Department receives the results of the
licensure examination taken by the temporary licensee;
- The temporary licensee shall practice only under the supervision of a licensed massage
therapist; and
- The temporary license shall be revoked if the temporary licensee fails the examination.
License Requirements: To qualify for a temporary license you, must:
- Not have held a temporary massage therapy license;
- Not have failed the licensure examination; and
- Meet all requirements for licensure as a massage therapist except passage of the
licensure examination.
Application Process: To apply for a temporary license, you must submit the
following:
Application
- Fee: $15.00
- Proof of age of majority. A copy of your birth certificate, marriage license,
drivers abstract, college or university transcript or other documentation which indicates
your date of birth.
- Official final transcript. This can be obtained from the school of massage
therapy that you attended; the transcript must show your name, the total hours of training
and the specified hours in each area, date of graduation, and the date you completed a
final practical examination.
Standards for Supervision. The supervisor must hold an active massage
therapy license and shall:
- Be present at the location where the temporary licensee is providing massage therapy
services;
- Consult with and direct the actions of a person who holds a temporary license to
practice massage therapy; and
- Immediately notify the Department when supervision of the temporary licensee is
terminated.
Expiration: 3 months from issuance.
Extension of a Temporary License. If you fail the licensure
examination, you may apply for an extension of a temporary license to practice massage
therapy. The Department, upon recommendation of the Board, may grant an application for
extension of a temporary license when the applicant has applied to retake the licensure
examination and shows good cause why such license should be extended. Circumstances which
may result in extension of the temporary license may include but are not limited to:
- Applicant became ill during the licensure examination to the extent he/she could not
complete the examination;
- Applicant had to leave the licensure examination due to inclement weather conditions
which caused the applicant to be unable to complete the examination;
- Lack of availability of a model at the time of administration of Nebraska Practical
Examination; or
- Applicant suffered an incapacitating injury prior to the licensure examination, which
allowed him/her to take the examination, but affected his/her ability to perform well on
the examination.
A temporary license may not be extended beyond 1 year.
Denial of Temporary License or Extension of a Temporary License. The
Department may deny an application for a temporary license or extension of a temporary
license. Circumstances which may result in denial include but are not limited to:
- Failure to pay the fee for a temporary license or extension of the temporary license;
- Falsification of any information submitted for the temporary license or extension of a
temporary license;
- Failure to show good cause for extension of a temporary license; or
- Violation of any of the provisions specified in the regulations
