An osteopathic physician and surgeon is a person who has earned the degree of D.O. (Doctor of Osteopathic Medicine). Osteopathic Physicians and Surgeons are qualified in the diagnosis or treatment of diseases, ailments, pain, deformity, or any physical or mental condition or injury of human beings. They can prescribe and furnish medicine for these conditions, or treat the conditions with surgery. Osteopathic physicians and surgeons are authorized to practice medicine and surgery in this state as defined by pdf icon Neb. Rev. Stat. §71-1,102. Anyone practicing medicine and surgery in this state and not specially excepted by pdf icon Neb. Rev. Stat. §71-1,103 must be licensed in Nebraska as either an Osteopathic Physician and Surgeon or as a Physician (M.D. – medical doctor).

Osteopathic physicians and surgeons are licensed by either "examination" or "reciprocity". These terms are specific to this state, so please read the definitions of each at Examinations.
