The practice of dentistry includes the ability to diagnose, treat, prescribe, or operate for any disease, pain, deformity, deficiency, injury, or physical condition of the teeth, jaws or adjacent structures.In order for a dentist to administer any of the following levels of anesthesia the dentist is REQUIRED to have a permit. A separate permit is needed for each location where the dentist will be administering anesthesia.

Inhalation analgesia means the administration of nitrous oxide and oxygen to diminish or eliminate pain in a conscious patient.- Parenteral Sedation (For more information call (402) 471-2118.)
Parenteral Sedation means the administration other than through the digestive tract, but not limited to, intravenous administration.- General Anesthesia (For more information call (402) 471-2118.)
General Anesthesia means a controlled state of unconsciousness accompanied by a partial or complete loss of protective reflexes, including the inability to independently maintain an airway and respond purposefully to physical stimulation or verbal command, and produced by a pharmacologic or nonpharmacologic method or a combination thereof.Dental Hygienist
A licensed dental hygienist shall perform the traditional dental hygiene functions only when authorized to do so by a licensed dentist who shall be responsible for the total oral health care of the patient.A licensed dental hygienist may only administer local anesthesia under indirect supervision (
§71-193.16) of a licensed dentist and after acquiring a local anesthesia certificate issued by the Department.
